Weekly Dynamic: Non-Sequential Report Writer reports

Reporting & BITips & Hidden Features

Archived post from 2014. Dynamics GP and the links it points to have changed since; check current documentation before relying on version-specific steps.

On Friday Feb. 21, 2014 I posted on Twitter that I had learned something new about Dynamics GP from fellow consultant, Darren Hunt (and by way of former consultant Sarah Redmond I found out later). I learn new stuff about GP all the time, It’s not like I was born with all of these weekly tips. Still, I got a lot of grief about it on Twitter so for everyone out there, here is what I learned.

Generally, in Reporter Writer-based reports you can’t pick non-sequential or non-consecutive ranges. For example, you can pick accounts 1100-1300 for a Trial Balance, but you can’t pick accounts 1100, 1102, 1107 and 1201 skipping accounts in between there. The interface won’t let you. But now I’ve learned that there is a way. Here is an example of how.

  1. In GP pick the Financial menu on the left.
  2. In the Financial Navigation Pane, pick, Accounts
  3. In the center check the box next to a number of non-consecutive accounts.
  4. Pick Report | Trial Balance
  5. Uncheck Include Detail just to make the report easier to read for now.
  6. Print the report to the screen.

You’ll get a trial balance with only the checked accounts. It’s like magic, so yeah, I learned something. I keep saying that Darren is smarter than me.
