GP 2013 introduced Reason Codes for inventory transactions. These are great for identifying why a transaction was made. Was this a write off due to spillage? A write on due to cycle counts? Did it fall off of cousin Vinny’s truck and into your warehouse?
That all seemed nice but when I dug into reason codes there’s more here than just identifying why the transaction was made. Reason codes can drive the accounting for the transaction as well. A Reason Code can force the offset account and it be can set to allow only decreases, only increases or both.
Reason Codes take some of the guesswork out of adjusting for inventory. The also provide really useful information for analyzing inventory adjustments. Think about what you’d like to see on a dashboard around inventory adjustment and reason codes and it opens up a new world of ideas.
