I was doing some testing with GP Workflow 2.0 today and ran into an issue. Emails wouldn’t send. After troubleshooting I remembered that my test system was setup to use my Gmail account and that I had recently turned on 2 factor authorization.

For those of you not familiar with this, when you sign in with 2 factor authentication turned on, a second identifier is required. This usually a code sent via text, a code from physical device or a software code from something like Google Authenticator. There are other methods, but the idea is that this provides an added layer of security for logins.

GP (and plenty of other apps) aren’t yet setup for 2 factor authentication. The workaround is that you can get a special password for an individual app that doesn’t support 2 factor authentication. That seemed reasonable in this case so I went that route…with no luck.

After a couple of frustrating minutes I realized what was going on, the 2 factor password from Google is 16 digits, GP only supports 15 digits in the password field…grrrrr.

I checked a couple of other services and 16 digits seems to be the standard for app passwords, so for now, I had to turn off 2 factor authentication. There doesn’t seem to be another workaround for now.

Most of you won’t have 2 factor authentication on for your work emails yet, but Office365 definitely supports it.
