As we get to end I don’t have a big bang final fraud. Instead we’ve got a quick look at some post holiday leftover frauds.

Grandma got her fraud on

Patricia Bennett is a 69 year old grandma who worked for the same firm for 25 years. She is accused of stealing £163,000 from her employer. She was an accounting manager and she reportedly shuffled funds to 3 bank accounts she controlled. She appears to have made payments to herself disguised as payments to legitimate vendors.

Her successor discovered the fraud that wend back at least 13 years. She seems to have spend the money mostly on vacations with her husband. Patricia served 18 months in prison for the fraud. The smartest thing Patricia did was take small amounts of money over a long time.

Even the Legion isn’t immune

The former president and treasure of a Canadian Legion branch have been charged with fraud. It’s alleged that Giuseppina Fedele, a former president of a Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Woodbridge, Ont. wrote cheques to herself using the Legion’s account and used the funds for her personal use. Between 2017 and 2019, she wrote 34 cheques (spelled this way because Canada) and 7 electronic money transfers to herself for more than $33k.

Police said the former treasurer, 61-year-old Nicola Pinto, partook by signing 24 of the written cheques to Fedele.

Stealing Dough

The former chief financial officer at collapsed bakery chain Patisserie Valerie is accused of  inflating profits, hiding debts, and presenting bogus figures in the company’s annual reports and public statements.

The company hole in the company’s financials is alleged to be as high as $94 million. Part of the allegations include presenting false invoices to their auditor, Grant Thornton.
