Friday Fun: An Open Letter to David Musgrave about his SDT

Install, Upgrade & Admin

Archived post from 2014. Dynamics GP and the links it points to have changed since; check current documentation before relying on version-specific steps.

Dear Dave,

Thanks for all of your hard work on the Support Debugging Tool for Dynamics GP. Features like company color coding, support email with screenshots, one-touch Dex SQL Logs and more are a huge help to those of us who work with Dynamics GP every day. However, we need one more thing from you.

Change the darn name!

I don’t know about Australia, but here in the US, I don’t go around advertising that I “debugger” stuff for a living. Saying things like that will get you arrested in Scotland and the Southern United States. Frankly, the initials SDT aren’t much better either. They make me imagine a conversation like this:

[Insert dream sequence transition]

Accountant to her manager: “Oh my gosh! I am so excited. I went to an offsite meeting on Friday and I got the new SDT. My partner gave it to me. I’m really looking forward to some of the fun things that I can do with it.”

[Manager takes a step back]

Manager: “What are you planning to do with it?”

Accountant: “Well I was so excited that I didn’t get it all, but they commented about security and protection, some things can change colors (they showed off a really ugly red), and I can “debugger” stuff. I don’t really remember it all. I do know that the next time someone calls in for support on Dynamics GP I’m going to “debugger” them! Plus I can do it remotely! I just need to make sure that everyone has the SDT. That’s my new mission, spread the SDT!

[Manager flees for HR]

[Accountant stands there confused]

The full name sounds like a tool for coders or experts not a tool for users. Even just the Support Tool is better. Poll the community and get some better names so we can improve adoption and generate some real buzz. I mean let’s face it the Professional Services Tools Library gets abbreviated PSTL and is usually pronounced “Pistol”.  Revenue and Expense Deferrals shortens to RED (a movement to cure AIDS and a really good band).  Both of those are cooler than SDT.  Don’t let the folks in Fargo have all the good names!

Thanks again for a great tool. Until you change the name I’ll keep giving people the SDT.

[PS. Since it’s technically “Unsupported” why not make “Support Debugging Tool” the code name. Then you can “release” with something sexier better.]
