Dynamics GP: Web Client Wednesday – Hidden UI Elements

Tips & Hidden FeaturesInstall, Upgrade & Admin

Archived post from 2013. Dynamics GP and the links it points to have changed since; check current documentation before relying on version-specific steps.

We looked a couple of weeks ago at UI differences between the web client and the desktop client for GP. I’ve been spending more time with the web client and want to highlight a few other items.

  • Distributions – on a number of windows the Distributions button has moved up on to the ribbon under the GoTo menu, which has moved as well into the middle rather than the far right. A good example is the Sales Transaction Entry window. It was weird not seeing the distribution button at the bottom.
  • Missing elements – There appear to be some missing elements. Close All Windows is one that I haven’t been able to find, but I have been able to add most missing items to the Quick Links window. Close All Windows works fine when added there.
  • Speed – There are some places, loading lists, where I think the web client is fast. I haven’t put a stop watch to it, but I perceive it as faster. Other times I feel a little lag, maybe changing Area Pages. One the whole, it feels about the same and yet different. I can’t quite put my finger on it yet.
  • Screen Size – I have a pretty small laptop with a  small screen. Occasionally I bump into the need to scroll certain windows in the web client. To avoid that, get more screen room and minimize distractions, my first thought was that Full Screen Mode (F11) would be my friend. It generally is, but I notice some cases where the menu bar drops down in IE’s full screen mode and refuses to go away. I assume that this is because the web client is an application, and the clicks are registering in the application, not at the browser level. Clicking the screen in a normal browser session, causes the menu bar to roll up and disappear. That doesn’t always happen when I’m working with the web client. Right now this appears to be IE specific. I haven’t spent enough time with Firefox to confirm this. I can replicate this if anyone at MS is interested.

The easiest way to get used to the web client is to use it. It’s a little addictive once you start to play with it.
